Decomposition of Organic Matter

Decomposition of Organic Matter
The decomposition of organic matter in sewage (stabilisation of sewage) takes place by two processes: aerobic and anaerobic.

Aerobic process It is the most efficient method of reducing the organic matter in sewage. The process requires a continuous supply of free dissolved oxygen. The organic matter is broken down into simpler compounds by the action of bacteria, fungi and protozoa.

Anaerobic process When the sewage is highly concentrated and contains plenty of solids, the anaerobic process is highly effective. In anaerobic decomposition, the reactions are slower and the mechanism of decomposition is extremely complex.

Sewage treatment is managed on small scale in individual homes and' rural areas as well as on large scale in towns by municipal bodies.
