Factors important for anaerobic digestion
A temperature of 35-37°C and pH 6-8 is optimal. Extremes of pH, influx of heavy metals, solvents, other toxic materials can easily upset the operation of the anaerobic digestion when it becomes' stick/som' where methane production is interrupt d and fatty acid and other fermentation products accumulate. Reactor must be cleaned and charged with large volumes of anaerobic sludge or appropriate methanogenic bacteria from an operational unit.

A normally operating anaerobic digestion yields a reduced volume of sludge which yields odour problems. Aerobic composting of the sludge consolidates the sludge and renders it suitable for disposal or for use as soil conditioner. Biogas produced consists of CO2, CH4, N2 and H2S and occasionally traces of H2. Anaerobic digestors are expensive to construct and require expert maintenance.
