Imhoff's Tank

Imhoff's Tank
This is an improved design of a septic tank that maintains anaerobic condition more strictly, produces some utilisable biogas and facilitates the settling of solids, but requires expert maintenance. The tank is divided into two sections thus they are double storeyed settling tanks. The upper section acts as the settling tank.

Fresh sewage is introduced in the upper compartment which slips by an opening in the lower compartment. The settling compartment is separated from the digestion compartment. Solids move down into the digestion compartment but are prevented from being carried back up into the settling compartment. Stabilised solids (digested) are removed from the bottom of the tank periodically. Usually, Imhoff tanks are 9 m deep and their construction is costly. The scrap, grease, oil, etc. flood at the top and form a scum. Imhoff tank is quite efficient in allowing complete digestion in 2-4 hours.
