Iron Bacteria

Iron Bacteria - These are the most important forms among nuisance organisms.
They transform soluble compounds of iron to insoluble compounds of iron like ferric hydroxide.
These insoluble compounds may either be deposited as sheath around the organism, as in the case of Sphaerotilus or get secreted out to form stalk or ribbons attached to the cell, as in the case of Gallionella.
The accumulation of insoluble material in the metal piping system may affect the flow rate. Iron bacteria also cause other problems like discoloration of water and undesirable odor and taste.
