Legionnaires Diseases

Legionnaires Diseases - It is a rare and severe pneumonia caused by Legionella pneumophila. Symptoms include fever, chills, dry cough, vomiting rand diarrhoea.
Legionella inhabits natural waters in very small numbers.
But they can multiply to infectious doses in warm and stagnant waters which are artificial aquatic habitats.
These include heat exchangers, cooling towers, shower heads and humidifiers.

Spraying and splashing of waters containing pathogens produce aerosols which are disseminated in air., Control measures include maintaining free residual chlorine in cold water supplies in buildings.
Controlling the temperature of water is another means of protection which can be achieved by ensuring that the cold water is circulated below 20°C and hot water above 50°C
