Leptospriosis - This is caused by Leptospira which infects the kidneys of wild and domestic animals.
The organisms are excreted in urine and may contaminate rivers, ponds and canals.
They survive for longer periods in natural waters. Symptoms include flu like fever.
In severe cases, the liver and kidney are infected resulting in jaundice and acute renal failure.
The species most dangerous to human beings is Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae which is pathogenic to rats and other rodents.
In human beings it causes Weils disease
