Other Microorganisms - Apart from faecal pollution indicators, other microorganisms are also of considerable importance in water supplies. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an important fluorescent pseudomonad may be derived from human or animal excrement, but its presence in faeces is not universal. Because of this reason and its ability to multiply in water P. aeruginosa is not suitable as an indicator of faecal pollution.
However, its presence in drinking water is undesirable as it may affect the color, odor, turbidity and taste of water. P. aeruginosa may be of some importance as an opportunistic pathogen.
Other fluorescent pseudomonads like P. fluorescens and P.
putida, may also give rise to problems in treated waters by producing slimes during their growth
