Poliomyelitis

Poliomyelitis - Poliomyelitis is caused by poliovirus, which along with echoviruses and coxsackie viruses constitute the enteric virus group.
Infection caused by polioviruses are of three types
(1) It may be an asymptomatic infection or mild influenza like illness.
(2) It may be a mild infection as above and may also include central nervous system with head ache, neck stiffness and back pain
(3) The severe case may be characterized by acute illness with pain and flaccid paralysis mainly affecting the lower legs.
Since the causative agent is released in faeces, faecal-oral route is the major mode of transmission
